On Thursday, November 28, 2024, the Kapita Selekta guest lecture featured W. Diana Ratri, M.Psi., a psychologist and Operational Manager at PT Tiga Daya Indonesia. Moderated by Dr. Fitri Puspasari, S.Si., M.Sc., a lecturer from the D4 Electrical Engineering Technology program at UGM Vocational College, the event carried the theme “Building Portfolio for Future Career”. It aimed to provide students with valuable insights into preparing for their professional careers.
Held virtually via Zoom at 3:30 PM WIB, the event attracted 50 participants from the D4 Electrical Engineering Technology and D4 Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology programs. The session included discussions on crafting compelling CVs, mastering interview techniques, and strategically building career portfolios aligned with modern industry demands. Attendees were also given the opportunity to ask direct questions about navigating job application and recruitment processes.
During her presentation, Diana Ratri outlined 12 common reasons why job applicants face rejection, such as unrealistic salary expectations, lack of experience, or unpreparedness during interviews. She emphasized the importance of self-awareness, understanding strengths and weaknesses, and developing a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound) career plan. Practical tips for creating an effective CV were also shared, highlighting the need for clear formatting, relevant information, and consistency.
Additionally, the speaker discussed key strategies for excelling in job interviews, including maintaining eye contact, using positive body language, and preparing evidence-based answers. She stressed that interviews are an opportunity to showcase analytical thinking, decision-making, and planning skills—competencies highly valued in the workplace. Diana also encouraged participants to consistently update their portfolios and reflect on their career progress.
The event not only provided technical knowledge but also inspired students to continue learning and growing. This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Quality Education, by equipping students with relevant skills to secure decent jobs and foster economic growth. With this preparation, students are expected to confidently shape successful professional futures.
