Becoming a Software Engineer

Entering its 15th week, the Kapita Selekta guest lecture for the D4 Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology and D4 Internet Engineering Technology programs featured the topic “Becoming a Software Engineer”. The session welcomed Guhya Eka Wijaya, M.Eng., a Senior Manager at eWIDEPLUS Corp., Korea, as the keynote speaker. Conducted virtually at 2:00 PM WIB, the event attracted 112 participants and was moderated by Dr. Eng. Ganjar Alfian, S.T., M.Eng., a faculty member of the Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology program.

Guhya Eka Wijaya began his presentation by outlining the Table of Content framework for understanding the software engineering profession. This framework, structured around the questions What, Who, Why, Where, and When, served as a guide for participants to grasp the fundamentals of the field. He defined software engineering as a discipline that combines programming, design, and problem-solving skills to develop innovative solutions. He further elaborated on the qualities of a successful software engineer, including strong analytical thinking, adaptability, and effective communication.

In addition to explaining the motivations (Why) and potential career paths (Where) within the software engineering domain, Guhya emphasized the importance of staying updated with evolving technologies and trends. He shared insights on the best practices for entering the field, such as engaging in internships, building a solid portfolio, and participating in collaborative projects. Concluding his presentation, he encouraged students to take proactive steps in shaping their professional journey while embracing the challenges of this dynamic industry. The engaging session left participants inspired and equipped with practical knowledge to pursue careers as future software engineers.
