On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, the Kapita Selekta public lecture for the D4 Software Engineering Technology and D4 Internet Engineering Technology programs was successfully held online at 2:00 PM (WIB). The event featured Septiaji Eko Nugroho, the head of Masyarakat Anti Fitnah Indonesia (MAFINDO), as the guest speaker, with the topic “Fact-Checking, Mafindo, and Fact-Check Tools.” The session was moderated by Firma Syahrian, S.Kom., M.Cs, a lecturer from the D4 Software Engineering Technology program.

A total of 116 participants joined the session, consisting of students and lecturers from both study programs. Septiaji Eko Nugroho discussed the crucial role of technology in combating the spread of false information or hoaxes. His presentation highlighted the following important tools and methods:

  • Fact-checking tools developed by Mafindo
  • Photo verification tools using various approaches
  • InVID WeVerify for verifying video and multimedia content
  • Geolocation checks to identify the location of images or videos
  • Anti-hoax technology developed by Mafindo
  • Collaboration tools for researchers and fact-checkers to work together

This lecture provided new insights into how students and the general public can leverage technology to prevent the spread of hoaxes and misleading information in the digital era. Mafindo introduced innovative features that are publicly accessible for verifying the authenticity of information.

The event emphasized the importance of involving all elements of society, especially students, in fighting against the spread of fake news, both within academic environments and in the broader community.

This public lecture also aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 4: Quality Education, by empowering students with the knowledge and tools to critically assess information.
  • SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, by promoting access to verified, factual information and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability in media and public discourse.

The lecture is expected to inspire students to actively contribute to combating the spread of false information in both their academic and personal lives.
