Development of an Algorithm for Optimizing Vehicle-to-Grid Implementation in the Power Distribution Network

October 4, 2024 – In an effort to support sustainable energy solutions, Candra Febri Nugraha, S.T., M.Eng., along with a team of students from the Electro Engineering Technology Program, has developed an innovative algorithm focused on optimizing the implementation of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology. This project, conducted at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, represents a strategic step toward integrating renewable energy sources into the power distribution network.

The algorithm, developed using Python programming, is designed to determine the most efficient charging schedule for electric vehicles (EVs). By optimizing charging times, the algorithm not only reduces operational costs for EV owners but also improves the overall efficiency of the power distribution network. The importance of this technology is increasingly recognized as global demand for clean energy rises.

This research was tested using the IEEE 33 Bus Test System model, but the algorithm was designed to be flexible enough for application in various electrical systems. This flexibility makes the algorithm a valuable tool for optimizing power grid management at different scales.

One of the key advantages of this algorithm is its potential for real-world application. The team is currently exploring the integration of the algorithm with hardware-based EV chargers. This integration could lead to more responsive and efficient energy distribution systems, significantly supporting the transition to clean energy technologies.

As the adoption of electric vehicles continues to grow, innovations like this algorithm are crucial to ensuring that energy infrastructure can accommodate the increasing number of EVs on the road. V2G technology integration offers a promising solution to enhance grid stability and maximize the use of renewable energy, accelerating progress toward a more sustainable energy future.
